The real question
The choice is not about quality. A carefully built template site can be excellent; a custom site can be poor. The question is what the website must do.
When a template is enough
If your site mainly explains services, shows credentials, and collects enquiries, a platform such as WordPress with a well-chosen theme usually covers it, and your team can edit content without a developer.
When custom is justified
Consider custom when you need a design a theme cannot produce, functionality that plugins do not provide, tight performance targets, or deep integration with your systems.
Pay for custom work only where a requirement actually demands it.
Cost and upkeep
Custom builds usually cost more to create and may depend more on the team that built them. Template sites need regular updates to stay secure. Plan for ongoing maintenance either way.
- 01List what the site must do and who it is for.
- 02Mark which requirements a template cannot meet.
- 03If none, start with a template and invest in content.
- 04If some, scope custom work to those parts only.
- 05Decide who will maintain the site after launch.
